Geotechnical & Tunnelling

Globally, CCi experts have worked on many complex ground and underground projects. These range from investigation, remediation and reclamation works to pipelines and tunnels in land, river and sea environments.

CCi experts have first-hand knowledge of the risks, design solutions and construction techniques in these areas.

Sector Background

CCi employ people that have gained extensive practical knowledge from working in the geotechnical, pipeline and tunnelling industries as contractors, specialist sub-contractors, engineers and designers.

How CCi Can Help

Our experienced technical experts identify the issues such as unforeseeable ground conditions, changes in performance of the ground and suitability of designs and methods of working. Our delay experts will analyse the impact of any issues on time, be that critical or non-critical delay, effects on outputs, disruption to operations and benefit of recovery measures. CCi’s quantum experts will assess the cost impact of all manner of issues and their consequences working closely with both our technical and delay experts.

Our Expertise in This Sector

CCi personnel are widely experienced with industry knowledge of current construction methods and are familiar with the most complex of contract arrangements. CCi understand the issues that are likely to arise on geotechnical, pipeline and tunnelling projects and stand ready to act with no learning curve.

Scope of Work

As well as claims assessment, dispute resolution and expert witnesses CCi advise on the technical and project control clauses that assist lawyers in drafting contracts that properly manage change and diminish risk. CCi experts can also oversee the project controls during the work and protect all parties from unnecessary risk of conflict.

Geotechnical/Tunnelling: Delay, Quantum and Technical Experts

Our specialist consultants, advisors and experts are strategically based around the globe, acting to protect your interests on construction, engineering, energy and technology projects. We focus on providing three core skill sets — planning, quantum and technical — which are intrinsically linked. These disciplines allow us to offer an integrated approach as well as individual expertise across this sector.

Geotechnical/Tunnelling Projects

CCi have worked on Geotechnical/Tunnelling projects worldwide, here are some examples:

Tunnel Project

Location: Spain

CCi was appointed by the tunnelling subcontractor as quantum expert and worked alongside the geotechnical expert to give an opinion on the losses incurred as a result of unforeseeable ground conditions. The set of arbitration was in Spain but the case involved a German geotechnical expert, a Spanish main contractor, a Brazilian arbitrator and an English subcontractor with no distinction as to what language the conditions of contract was governed by (Spanish or English). Case management and production of documents in various languages was an interesting challenge.

Ground Engineering and Geotechnical Pre-construction Services Project (HS2)

Location: UK

CCi was appointed to provide claims management support on the largest geotechnical ground investigation programme in Europe, delivered from commencement to final account.

Tunnel Drive Project

Location: UK

A tunnel drive of several kilometres with associated shafts and bore pits encountered unexpected physical conditions. CCi was appointed as quantum expert in an ICC arbitration working alongside various technical experts. This involved ascertaining the effect on production and costs in tunnelling through unforeseeable conditions versus pre-construction site investigation reports.
